CFAES Career Development Office Recruiting Guidelines/Policies
The mission of The Ohio State University College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences Career Development Office is to link Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences students who seek pre- and post-graduate career opportunities with employers who wish to hire them. The office does not provide resumes, access to student registration information, and access to our web job listing service to third parties; nor are third parties permitted to schedule interviews on campus.
Third parties which do not charge a fee to the candidate may fax or e-mail job opening information if accompanied by information describing the organization and its fee structure. This information will be posted online and made available to students who may be interested in pursuing such opportunities. For exception to the above policy please contact Adam Cahill at cahill.71@osu.edu or 614-292-1589.
Definition of Third Party Recruiters
The National Association for Colleges and Employers (NACE), the national professional association for college career services offices and employers, defines third party recruiters as follows: "Third-party recruiters are agencies, organizations, or individuals recruiting candidates for temporary, part-time, or full-time employment opportunities other than for their own needs. This includes entities that refer or recruit for profit or not for profit, and it includes agencies that collect student information to be disclosed to employers for purposes of recruitment and employment."
Temporary agencies which contract with employers to provide individuals qualified to perform specific tasks or complete specific projects for a client organization are considered to be employers, not third-party recruiters. These individuals perform work at the client organization but are employed and paid by the agency. Temporary agencies will be expected to abide by the professional conduct principles set forth by NACE for employer professionals.
** If you have any questions about this policy, contact Adam Cahill at cahill.71@osu.edu or 614-292-1589.
Your virtual recruiting event has been approved at The Ohio State University. We ask that you consider providing accessibility accommodations for students who might have a diverse range of hearing, movement, sight or cognitive abilities. We recommend that you make an accommodations request as part of the event registration, including contact information for your company’s representative.
Example: If you require an accommodation such as live captioning or interpretation to participate in this event, please contact Recruiter at Recruiter@yourcompany.com or 614-555-5555. Requests made by (date) will generally allow us to provide seamless access, but we will make every effort to meet requests made after this date.It is a violation of university policy, as well as state and federal law, to exclude a participant who requests a disability accommodation.
The best way to get opportunities out to our students and alumni is through our online job board in Handshake.
Employers can create an account and post openings directly to our students and alumni through this system at handshake.osu.edu.
This will also allow employers to access resumes from those who have posted it for employers to view. Employers can view them based on major, class level, and graduation date and it gives them an additional way to directly sort, select, and message candidates and encourage them to apply.
** Please note that for security reasons and to avoid making assumptions about what the employer’s intentions are on job description screening items, we no longer send out stand-alone job postings or post it into our online job system on the behalf of employers.
Ways to Connect and Recruit in CFAES
https://handshake.osu.edu/. Every student at Ohio State has an account and can view openings in Handshake from employers. You can screen based on major, class level and several other factors to best meet your needs.
You can also view student resumes in Handshake. Students have the option to allow employers to view their documents during their employment search process. You can access the resumes, and filter it by major, class level and so on to see what students have “put themselves out there” for an employer to find. You can then reach out to them based on your interest.
Depending on your timeline to hire, attend one of our colleges on-campus or virtual career fairs to meet students, collect resumes, and network. Our events for the upcoming year can be found above.
We have several clubs and student organizations that you could visit with to speak about your industry and business and all you have to offer. If you are interested in this option, please message cfaes-careers@osu.edu and a customized list of contacts and clubs based on your target areas can be provided.
OSU AlumniFire is another great way to have your employees who are OSU alumni connect and mentor current students. They can create profiles at https://osu.alumnifire.com/ and students can then search for them as resources for resume reviews, job shadows, and mentoring opportunities.
We create alumni highlights to showcase the alumni, employers, and career options that students have in front of them. If you or any CFAES alumni in your organization would like to be featured, we would set up an interview to learn more about the alumni’s experiences and write a short profile on them to share with current and future students. Interested CFAES alumni can message cfaes-careers@osu.edu to start this process.
We also create intern highlights to showcase the amazing work our current students are completing while on internships. If your organization has hired a CFAES student, WE WANT TO KNOW! Send us a message at cfaes-careers@osu.edu to start this process. As always, we encourage you to check with the intern first to make sure they are interested in being featured.
